Whether or not the child has breathed or been given a name, he or she has lived- Sarah York, author of "Remembering Well: Rituals for Celebrating Life and Mourning Death"

Today at 7 pm BC Place with be illuminated in blue and pink lights to honor all the babies whose lives were cut short due to miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, stillbirth, neonatal death, and infant death. The pain of perinatal loss is excruciating and the grief that lingers is invisible to most but weighs heavy in the hearts of moms and dads who dreamed of a future for a pregnancy, baby, or child who mattered.

BC Place is just one of the venues in British Columbia that will honor Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day. Check out the October 15th- Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness website for all the events going on across Canada. The process of remembering can be viewed “as the crack where the light gets in” for those who are grieving a loss and for society through the collective acknowledgment that perinatal loss matters.

If you don’t have a chance to get out to one of these events, consider lighting a candle at 7 pm tonight to honor those who have experienced and are coping with perinatal loss as well as the babies they have lost. To publicly acknowledge the loss of your baby, tweet his or her name and due date or birth date: #Mybabymattered

To learn more about perinatal loss, I invite you to watch this brief Coping With Perinatal Loss YouTube video.

Love and Light, Judi
