Grief & Loss Therapy
Whether you are facing the loss of a loved one, beloved pet, pregnancy, and relationship or a loss of function or role, Dr. Alan Wolfelt reminds us that “grief is a process not an event”.
Losing someone that you love is one of the most devastating experiences that one can go through in life. Many grievers feel overwhelmed by the intense emotions that occur while anticipating a loss and after a loss. Although grief is a uniquely personal experience, it is common for grief to impact the body, emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. About 10% of grieving individuals will experience complicated grief which is marked by longstanding grief reactions that are intense and debilitating.
Grief counselling can help grievers adapt and adjust to life during and after a loss. My approach to grief counselling is to work collaboratively to help you make sense of your loss and provide compassionate support throughout the grieving process.
Patients and families facing terminal illness usually begin the grieving process prior to the actual loss. This is known as anticipatory grief which is a natural process that helps individuals prepare for emotional and physical closure. It is also a time when both patient and family prepare for change.
My approach to anticipatory grief counselling helps to support your ability to cope with overwhelming feelings that arise, prepare you for end-of-life issues, and connect you with supportive community resources as appropriate for your needs and circumstances.
