Therapy for Highly Sensitive Persons

The Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) have a personality trait which impacts one in five people. Dr. Elaine Aron has been researching HSPs since 1991 and has identified several distinguishing characteristics that are found in HSP. According to Dr. Aron, HSP tend to have four innate behavioral patterns (hsperson.com): -Depth of processing Signs of this include feeling and reflecting deeply about your external world (e.g., relationships, work, the meaning of life), being highly empathetic, difficulty making decisions, and needing more time to transition between tasks. -Overstimulation Signs of this include chronic stress, burnout, heightened awareness of subtle details, easily overstimulated in social situations which can lead to exhaustion, may need quiet time to regulate nervous system. -Emotional intensity Signs of this include having stronger positive and negative feelings about life experiences than non-HSPs, emotional reactivity to the emotions of others (empathy). -Sensory sensitivity Signs of this include “overwhelmed by such things as bright lights, strong smells, coarse fabrics, or sirens nearby” and more (hsperson.com).
